From the office admin. who was very detailed in what to expect from their service to the technician who came out to conduct an initial inspection and maintenance on our two residential units. WHAT IS A SUMP PUMP?

A sump is a pit or hollow, which usually collects liquids. A pump is a device that uses suction or pressure to move liquids, gases, etc. A sump pump refers to the mechanical device that is installed into a sump, normally at the lowest point of the home (in a basement or crawl space). The sump pump works by using a pressure sensor or float mechanism (similar to your toilet) to detect the presence of water. When water enters the sump, the pump (electric motor) automatically turns on and starts to remove the excess water from beneath your home. As water leaves the pipe, the check valve on the water outlet pipe prevents the water from returning. This leaves only one way out—an outdoor well or city storm drain.

TYPES OF PUMPS

The pedestal sump pump stands upright. The electric motor near the top of the pump, which is not supposed to get wet. The pump is located at the bottom. When the ball float indicates the presence of water, the pump turns on.

Pedestal Pros:

  • Cheaper
  • Easier Repairs and Maintenance
  • Longer Lasting Motor

Pedestal Cons:

  • Louder
  • Less Effective Against Heavy Flooding
  • Higher Risk of Clogs

The submersible sump pump, on the other hand, is designed to be submerged in water and sit at the bottom of the pump. Since the motor is sealed and protected, water doesn’t pose a risk. The on/off switch is attached to the pump and can either be connected to a ball float (with an internal pressure switch) or a sealed mercury-activated float switch. The sealed mercury switch is normally more reliable and effective than the pressure switch, but the maintenance and repairs for it may be more expensive.

Submersible Pros:

  • Hidden and Out of the Way
  • More Effective Against Heavy Flooding
  • Faster Water Pumping

Submersible Cons:

  • More Expensive to Install
  • Higher Repair and Maintenance Costs
  • Shorter Lasting Motor

All sump pump motors run on electricity, which can be a problem if there is a power outage. That’s why we recommend having a battery backup system in place. Sump pumps with battery backups or those hooked up to a generator provide 24/7 protection regardless of the status of the city’s power grid. Battery backups are important since you will most likely need your sump pump during a strong storm that knocks the power out. In addition to battery backups, make sure your sump pump has an alarm sensor that alerts you when water has reached a certain level. This is especially important if you have a manual sump pump.

Manual sump pumps need to be turned on and off manually. An automatic sump pump has a switch that automatically activates the pump whenever water has reached a certain level. For proper and continuous sump pump operation (even if you are not home), we recommend automatic sump pumps with battery backups. No matter which type of sump pump you have, it will have a check valve to prevent the water from coming back into the home.

Whether you need professional sump pump maintenance, repair, or installation, Bannister Plumbing & Air will make sure that you get the best possible service every time. We are a full-service plumbing company that provides Maintenance, Repairs, Replacements, Remodeling, and New Construction for Residential and Commercial properties in Jacksonville, Tyler, and all of East Texas.
