From the office admin. who was very detailed in what to expect from their service to the technician who came out to conduct an initial inspection and maintenance on our two residential units. I was also pleased to receive a text that provided a name and photograph of the AC technician. Would highly recommend this company for a professional quality service.

Do I Need To Repipe My East Texas Home Or Business?

There are many reasons why you may need to replacing the plumbing for your home or commercial property:

Age

Do you know how old your pipes are? Aged and word pipes are the number one reason for repiping services. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, the average age of a broken water main is 47 years old. Nothing lasts forever.

What is the life expectancy of your plumbing pipes?

If you know what kind of pipes you have, you’ll be able to tell if it’s time for a repipe.

  • Brass – 40-70 years
  • Copper – 50-70 years
  • Galvanized Steel – 20-50 years
  • Cast Iron – 50-75 years
  • PVC (polyvinyl chloride) – 50-70 years

If you have polybutylene piping, contact your local plumber for an inspection as soon as you can. They are extremely prone to leaks and breakages. If you have lead water pipes, test the water immediately. If you have more lead than 15 ppb (parts per billion), call a professional plumber right away!

Although your pipes might fit into these timeframes, it doesn’t necessarily mean that they need to be replaced. Well-maintained plumbing systems last longer, and the quality of the water has an impact as well. If you don’t know what kind of pipes you have, call the professional plumbers at Bannister Plumbing & Air to assess their age and condition.

Supply or Return?

The supply pipes are under more pressure (literally) than your return pipes. Usually copper, brass, or galvanized steel are used for supply pipes. Supply pipes are most likely to leak or burst. Return (drain) pipes tend to last longer since they aren’t under constant pressure. Usually, these pipes are made of PVC or cast iron. If you have cast iron drain pipes, they should last somewhere between 75 and 100 years.

Are You Responsible?

If there is a broken pipe between your property line (water meter) and the street, the local district is responsible for the repair. However, if there is a rupture or break in your plumbing system between the water meter and your home or business, you are responsible for repairs. Determining maintenance responsibility can be confusing. Contact Bannister Plumbing & Air to if you have any questions.

Potential Warning Signs

Repiping is necessary when pipes begin to show their age. Here are some common signs of a failing plumbing system:

  • Low water pressure
  • Rust in the water
  • Poor tasting drinking water
  • Repeated leaks
  • Slab leaks
  • Extensive water damage
  • Pipes are made of low grade or defective materials

If any of these plumbing problems are plaguing your home, make a quick call to Bannister Plumbing & Air for a professional inspection on your schedule.

Causes of Pipe Damage

If you've noticed a leaking pipe or other problem, damage to your plumbing can be caused by:

  • Corrosion: All pipe material will eventually degrade. Rust and other corrosion slowly eat away at the material until water leaks through small holes or the whole pipe collapses. Pipes laid decades ago are more delicate than the materials used today. Chemicals, minerals and imbalanced water pH can speed up the process.
  • High water pressure: Although higher water pressure is better for cleaning and showering, it can stress the insides of pipes. Excessive pressure can cause intermittent leaks or rupture a hose. If leaks are noticed immediately after use, contact a plumber to test the line/water pressure and adjust the system if necessary.
  • Damaged Gaskets: Rubber gaskets are important parts of your plumbing system. When intact, they provide watertight connections. A dry, cracked, crumbled, or otherwise damaged gasket can allow water to enter and cause water damage.
  • Damaged Connections: Pipes and your entire home can shift over time, whether due to erosion, flooding, earthquakes, or foundation problems. This can lead to broken pipe fittings and create a major household disaster.
  • Persistent clogs: If your drains keep clogging, it can seem like a minor annoyance. However, clogs put a strain on your plumbing system, while chemical deblockers can accelerate damage by galling at pipes.

Signs You Need Repiping Services

Several symptoms can tell you it's time to call a plumber. Hose repair or replacement may be necessary if you notice the following:

  • Low pressure from your faucets: Corrosion and severe clogs can affect water flow.
  • Extreme fluctuations in water temperature: Hot water lines tend to deteriorate faster, and debris tends to get lodged in the anti-scalding devices first.
  • Discolored Water: Flakes of corroded metal in the pipe will produce a brown or red tint in the water being used.
  • Noise: Screams, clicks, groans, and bangs mean your pipes and equipment aren't working as expected, or that there are unusual pressure changes.
  • You can't use more than one device at a time: the shower gets hot when the toilet is flushed, or using two or more devices at the same time causes problems.

Signs of a disk leak, such as Moisture in your basement, for example, can also indicate a plumbing problem.

Benefits Of Pipe Replacement

Homeowners are often reluctant to inspect and repair their pipes. It's helpful to know the benefits of a renovation or a simple repair and the more serious problems it can avoid. Transplanting your home doesn't have to be stressful or overly expensive. It can reap positive benefits such as:

  • Affordability: Trenchless completion requires minimal digging and labor, and the results are durable, saving you money in the long run.
  • Minimal Disruption: New technologies, including trenchless methods and pipe hardened in place, effectively repair damage and restore your pipelines.
  • Speed: Modern transplanting can often be completed within hours, especially if you avoid time-consuming processes like digging and excavating.
  • Many problems can be solved: Corrosion, cracking and plant infiltration can be solved by replacing the pipes.
  • Longevity: Newer pipes can last longer, while trenchless pipes can last up to 50 years.
