How to Unclog a Double Kitchen Sink

(With and Without Waste Disposal)

We know that a kitchen sink will eventually clog, no matter how well you take care of it. That's why it's important to have a flushing plunger handy.

But how about a double sink with garbage disposal? Or a double sink with no garbage disposal? Let me show you some simple techniques you can use to get these types of jobs done.

Here's everything you need to rid that double kitchen sink, whether it has garbage disposal or not:

• Rubber gloves
• Sink stopper
• Petroleum jelly
• A friend with an old rag
• Sink (or flat) plunger

PRO TIP: First, notice that I referred to the plunger as the "flush plunger." You want to make sure the plunger you are using is rated for a flat surface like a sink drain. Do not use a toilet plunger. You can read more about the correct use of pistons here.

How to Unclog a Double Kitchen Sink with No Garbage Disposal

First, remove the strainer from the sink and, using rubber gloves, remove any debris that may be lodged in the drain hole.

Now insert the flush plug into the drain hole on the unclogged side. Why is it important to do this? If you don't, the water will flow from sink to sink instead of forcing food debris down the drain.

Apply petroleum jelly to the rim of the flask and place it just above the drain hole. If the water in the sink does not cover the plunger, add enough water.

Pump the plunger vigorously at least 10 to 12 times on each attempt.

How to Unclog a Double Kitchen Sink with Waste Disposal

It works for a single or double kitchen sink connected to waste disposal. Start by inserting the sink plug into the unclogged sink drain hole.

If your sink has an air gap

Block water that would otherwise penetrate while diving. And believe me, water can shoot very far. An air space is a chrome dome about 3 inches tall that sits next to the faucet. Its purpose is to prevent contaminated water from flowing back into the dishwasher.

You can block the water either by using a small C-clamp to plug the pipe that connects the air gap to the garbage disposal. If you don't have a C-clamp, just have a friend or family member hold an old rag over the air gap while you use the plunger.

Apply petroleum jelly to the piston

Apply a little petroleum jelly to the edge of the longest. This creates a more secure tight seal which in turn creates more diving power. Place the plunger directly over the drain hole. Be sure to add enough water to cover the plunger cup.

Start Pumping

Pump the plunger vigorously at least 10 to 12 times. Or until the water runs down the drain. You can ask your friend to remove the cloth now.

How about a Single Sink with No Waste Disposal?

Unclogging a single kitchen sink is easy.

Again, start putting petroleum jelly on the rim of your flask. Now place it over the drain hole. Keep the piston aligned with the drain hole for a more secure fit and more productive diving. Make sure the plunger cup is covered with water.

Now dive up and down a dozen times. Keep pumping until the problem is solved.

As you can see, it's relatively easy for any do-it-yourselfer to unclog a single or double sink - with or without a garbage disposal. Even new owners can handle it.
