GARBAGE DISPOSALS

Garbage Disposals Services For Tyler & Jacksonville, TX

Garbage disposal are magic pieces of machinery. They grind up food waste that would normally have to be thrown in the garbage, simplifying our lives in the kitchen. Unfortunately, they can’t handle everything. Due to overloaded garbage disposals, holidays such as Super Bowl Sunday, are the busiest days of the year for plumbers. The main problem is normally overloaded toilets and garbage disposals.

Fortunately, many of the problems associated with garbage disposals are avoidable.

GARBAGE DISPOSAL TYPES

When you begin shopping for a new garbage disposal, keep in mind that there are many different brands to choose from. What you really want to pay attention to is the amount of horsepower (HP) the unit has. Save your research. a licensed professional plumber from Bannister Plumbing will be able to tell you which garbage disposal unit will be best for your home. Lower end models tend to have 1/3 HP. If you are don’t have a lot of people in the home—if it’s just you and your girlfriend, for instance—then this might be a sufficient amount of horsepower. If you have a larger household, however, it’s better to get a garbage disposal with at least ½ HP. The higher up models have ¾ HP or greater for maximum performance.

CONTINUOUS FEED VS BATCH FEED

There are two main types of garbage disposals: continuous feed or batch feed.

  • Continuous-feed garbage disposals will run for as long as the power is turned on.
  • Batch-feed disposals run for a set amount of time before automatically shutting themselves off.

Although most homes have continuous-feed models, it may not necessarily be the right choice for you. Households with young children tend to prefer the batch-feed models because they require a special stopper before running the unit, thereby reducing the risk of any garbage disposal accidents.

Banister Plumbing & Air was very professional from start to finish. From the office admin. who was very detailed in what to expect from their service to the technician who came out to conduct an initial inspection and maintenance on our two residential units. I was also pleased to receive a text that provided a name and photograph of the AC technician. Would highly recommend this company for a professional quality service.

GARBAGE DISPOSAL MAINTENANCE

What Not to Put Down the Garbage Disposal:

  • Glass, metal, plastic, utensils or any other inorganic materials
  • Grease, oil, and fat
  • Stringy vegetables
  • Pasta or rice
  • Pits and bones
  • Coffee grounds and eggshells
  • Large amounts of anything

How to Get Your Garbage Disposal Working Again:

  • Check the Circuit Breaker
  • Press the reset button (on the underside of your garbage disposal)

If that doesn’t work, turn off power to the garbage disposal. Grab a hex key (Allen wrench) and get underneath the garbage disposal unit. Look for an opening for the hex key and give it a few manual turns of the wrench. This should dislodge whatever is clogging up the unit. Turn the power back on and press the reset button. Beyond using a hex key to manually turn the garbage disposal’s flywheel, do not attempt any more complicated repairs. If you have tried resetting and unjamming the unit, but the disposal still won’t work, call your local plumber for a full inspection.

Freshen Your Garbage Disposal:

If you smell something coming from your garbage disposal, you can deodorize the unit by grinding up some ice along with a few edges of citrus (lime or lemon work best).

Garbage Disposal Safety Tips:

  • Never put your hand down the disposal.
  • Do not touch the power switch when your hands are wet.
  • If you have kids at home, install a “batch-feed” garbage disposal for extra safety.

While garbage disposals give their owners years upon years of reliable service, like everything, there is a time when service or repair is needed. For professional garage disposal service, contact Bannister Plumbing & Air.
