Garbage disposal are magic pieces of machinery. They grind up food waste that would normally have to be thrown in the garbage, simplifying our lives in the kitchen. Unfortunately, they can’t handle everything. Due to overloaded garbage disposals, holidays such as Super Bowl Sunday, are the busiest days of the year for plumbers. The main problem is normally overloaded toilets and garbage disposals.
Fortunately, many of the problems associated with garbage disposals are avoidable.
When you begin shopping for a new garbage disposal, keep in mind that there are many different brands to choose from. What you really want to pay attention to is the amount of horsepower (HP) the unit has. Save your research. a licensed professional plumber from Bannister Plumbing will be able to tell you which garbage disposal unit will be best for your home. Lower end models tend to have 1/3 HP. If you are don’t have a lot of people in the home—if it’s just you and your girlfriend, for instance—then this might be a sufficient amount of horsepower. If you have a larger household, however, it’s better to get a garbage disposal with at least ½ HP. The higher up models have ¾ HP or greater for maximum performance.
There are two main types of garbage disposals: continuous feed or batch feed.
Although most homes have continuous-feed models, it may not necessarily be the right choice for you. Households with young children tend to prefer the batch-feed models because they require a special stopper before running the unit, thereby reducing the risk of any garbage disposal accidents.

If that doesn’t work, turn off power to the garbage disposal. Grab a hex key (Allen wrench) and get underneath the garbage disposal unit. Look for an opening for the hex key and give it a few manual turns of the wrench. This should dislodge whatever is clogging up the unit. Turn the power back on and press the reset button. Beyond using a hex key to manually turn the garbage disposal’s flywheel, do not attempt any more complicated repairs. If you have tried resetting and unjamming the unit, but the disposal still won’t work, call your local plumber for a full inspection.
If you smell something coming from your garbage disposal, you can deodorize the unit by grinding up some ice along with a few edges of citrus (lime or lemon work best).
